High on a hill, nestled between the sierras and
the
sea, Vejer de
la Frontera is a beautifully preserved, white hilltop village.
Declared a national monument in 1978, Vejer still
retains a potent Moorish character. With Christian churchs and
convents, Moorish architecture and a Jewish quarter, it is a microcosm
of Spain's colourful history.
Explore the many historical
monuments, including turreted mediaeval walls, minarets, churches and
convents. Behold the panoramic views to the sea and, on a
clear day, Africa beyond.
The wonderful thing about being in Vejer is how
quickly
one forgets the hustle and bustle of life in the city. The pace of life
here is so quintessentially Andalucian. The day often starts
lazily, in typical Spanish
style, with freshly-squeezed orange juice, cafe con leche and tostada
with tomato, garlic and olive oil.
The Plaza de Espaņa, with its wonderful frog
fountain, is a great place to watch the world go by. Enjoy an ice-cream
or a glass of sherry. Vejer has a wonderful array of restaurants.
For fine dining choose from Moroccan cuisine at El Califa, French
cuisine
at Vera Cruz or Spanish at The Trafalgar. For simpler fare there are
many options including tapas, pizza or crepes.
